Trends in Adult Learning

My course partner Tonya and I discussed adult education trends in Technology.  Tonya discussed game based learning in adult education, and I looked at technology and adult education - my desire really around how to use technology to promote engagement and consequently learner success.

Trend # 1 - Technology and adult learning
In her article, Technology and Adult Education: Current Perspectives, (Imel) talks about how technology will impact curriculum as adults not only learn content through technology but also learn about technology itself.  Technology will also become a delivery mechanism as it becomes the means for instructional delivery.  In addition it will be used to complement and extend learning.  Finally, she says technology will be integrated into instructional activities as an instructional tool.

Trend # 2 - Game based learning in adult education.
Tanya reviewed the article: Game-based versus traditional case-based learning. This article evaluated family physicians’ enjoyment of and knowledge gained from game-based learning, compared with traditional case-based learning, in a continuing medical education (CME) event on stroke prevention and management.  The trend in using gaming is on the rise.  Games are an innovative educational method that promotes self-learning, discussions and interaction, engaging the learner.  Tanya described her fascination of realizing that games could be used for learning and wished that teaching method had implemented in her time in school.  She believed it would have made her psychology lectures more engaging.  Be sure to check out her blog: The Journey of an Adult Educator.
